INTROIT No. 805    If My People’s Hearts Are Humbled                             Choir

If you are suffering now, be glad and take heart.

We will shout for joy when Christ’s glory is revealed.

Cast all your cares upon the Lord, who cares for you.

The God of grace will support and sustain us. Amen.

*GLORIA PATRI                                           (both inside cover-Hymnal)

Out of the depths of despair, we cry to you, O God. We are lost in a world of pain and suffering. When we put our trust in weapons of war, we find no peace. When we put our faith in our own resources, we feel the ache of our true needs.

When we put our hope in the health of our bodies, we suffer pain and find no healing. Come to us, O God. Forgive our doubts and fears. Heal our brokenness, that we may rejoice in your steadfast love. Amen.

There is forgiveness and healing with God.

God’s steadfast love has the power to redeem

our brokenness and make us whole.

By the power of redemption, God brings us forgiveness.

All Praise and Glory to God.

Water from the Well

With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.

(Isaiah 12:3)

Listen So That You Will See

Written by Joanne Boyette                                                                                     Inspired by God

“So then, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message comes through preaching Christ.” (Romans 10:17)

While reading many differing definitions of the word ‘faith’, I came across

an interesting story about a blind man, named Daniel Kish.

Daniel doesn’t ‘know’ sight.  He has no memory of it.  Before two years of age, he lost both eyes as a result of retinal cancer. Yet, Daniel taught himself to ‘see’ by listening to the clicking sounds he makes as he moves about through the world. With this ability, he can safely ride his bike down a suburban street.

Daniel Kish, today, is a well-educated, 54 year old American who resides in California. He is president of World Access for the Blind. Kish and his nonprofit organization have taught a form of ‘echolocation’ to at least 500 blind children around the world. Daniel taught himself to ‘see by listening with his ears!’ And, he is sharing the gift of his skill and hard work, acquired as a result of his ‘disability,’ to help other blind kids “see”, as well!

“Seeing by listening” is what the Bible tries to teach us about faith.

2 Corinthians 5:7 says, “For our life is a matter of faith, not of sight.”

I recently read some writing (by John W. Ritenbaugh) on the topic of

“faith.” Ritenbaugh wrote, “Faith is the very beginning of everything that

really matters spiritually.” He also wrote that, “hearing—or more correctly, listening—is probably Jesus’ most frequent and consistent exhortation during His ministry.”

If Jesus repeats it again and again, it must be critically important. And, we, on the receiving end, have to be entirely sure that we are doing more than just “hearing His spoken words.” We are called to be intently listening, which implies a heightened attention when hearing the spoken words plus an

unspoken, but implied commitment to obey and act. We have to put what we heard into practice. That’s “walking by faith.”

It reminds me of those times when my Dad would say “Did you hear what I said?” I would say, “Yes, I heard you.” To which he would say,

“Good, then you’d better listen.” That was the end of the conversation, but I knew it wasn’t the end of the lesson. The end of the lesson was unspoken, yet, I heard it loudly and clearly. The end of the lesson was, “Then you’d better do as you were told or you are going to be in big trouble.” I understood my Dad and I believed my Dad because I knew He “meant what he said and said what he meant.” And, I had faith in my father.

Luke 6: 46-49 tells how Jesus feels when we don’t have faith in Our Heavenly Father. “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord, and yet don’t do what I tell you? Anyone who come to me and listens to my words and obeys them—I will show you what he is like. He is like a man who, in building his house, dug deep and laid the foundation on rock.                                                                            The river flooded over and hit that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. But anyone who hears my words and does not obey them is like a man who built his house without laying a foundation; when the flood hit that house it fell at once—and what a terrible crash that was!”

Every time we hear His Word; in Sunday school, Bible Study, worship, during a devotion time, etc, we have to “listen so we can see.” And, when we are walking in faith, fully relying on Him, we will continue to receive His every blessing! He will love us unconditionally. He will provide for us and He will protect us, no matter what.

The following was written on a plaque which I gave to my husband.

“When you have come to the edge

Of all the light you have known

And are about to step out into the darkness Faith is knowing one of two things will happen; There will be something to stand on

You will be taught how to fly.”

And, to God will be the Glory!

Heavenly Father, Thank you for Your faithfulness to us! Thank you for the peace, love and hope in Your Word. Help us, Dear Lord, to “listen so that we might see” and to “walk in faith,” forever. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
